History lecture underway at Mummers Museum on immigration to Philadelphia via Pier 53 and its area & impact on Pennsport neighborhood. Irish, Jewish and Italian immigration already strong in S. Philadelphia in the 1840s and 50’s. Great history on the Humphreys shipyard, and the original Navy Yard, Prime Street, the PA Railroad, the American line, the Red Star line and the Immigration Station. The Pier 53 area was Phila.’s Ellis Island. Through most of the 1800’s Philadelphia was America’s main port of entry. Immigration remained strong in the early 1900’s.
