Strutting into a Higher Gear

Here we are.  A month away from the big day.  With Thanksgiving behind us and December beginning, the human machinery that makes the Mummers Parade go shifts into a higher gear.  The rehearsals and suit and prop building pick up and it all becomes more intense with New Year’s Day in sight.

It is official.  The 2011 Mummers Parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.(this is the same time as last year), with the Comics stepping off in South Philadelphia.  Coverage on PHL 17 begins at 9 a.m. with Breakfast with the Mummers.  Then, we’ll go Live at City Hall when the parade arrives.  The Wench Brigade Division will follow the Comics.  Next will be the Fancy Clubs.  Then, the String Bands.  Of course, the Fancy Brigades will be performing that afternoon and evening indoors at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in two shows, Noon and 5 p.m.  Coverage on television of the Fancy Brigade Finale is scheduled for 8 p.m. on PHL 17.

Several folks have been asking about coverage outside of the Philadelphia region.  Here’s where it stands.  No web cam coverage is planned and WGN America is not carrying the parade this year.  However, Tribune stations in at least 3 other cities will be carrying parts or all of the parade.  I will pass along the final list in the next few days.

  1. I really do wish that I could get the Parade here in Florida.I am and always will be a Mummers Fan.My Dad who passed away this past May was with the Parade for many many years. With many different clubs.Last was the Froggy Carr Club, “Downtown Chalie Brown ” “Brownie” I know that alot of you know who he was.2010 was the day he never got to strut, unfortunately he had a stroke that morning on his way to strut on 2nd street. So for me this year would be a marvelous thing to see the Parade in Fla

    • I wish it were broadcast nationally, too, Teri. So far there isn’t the financial support to make that happen. But maybe one day.

  2. Dear Steve, we live in Carbondale PA, WE DO NOT GET PHILY OR NEW YORK STATIONS on Adams Cable, can you please tell me several locations were we could go that carries ch 17 or the Tribune Stations in New YORK, I DON’T want to miss this years’ Parade…………….jj pollits

    • JJ, here’s alll that is available as of this time other than WPHL tv’s coverage. will have still photos and some video posted, but nothing live, no streaming. Below is the list of the non-Philadelphia coverage.

New York City will carry only 2 hours of the parade and as of this writing I have not been informed of which two hours. Whatever they decide will be on channel 11.2 over the air, or the “THIS TV” channel on NY cable.

Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and Lebanon will carry the full outdoor parade from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on WPMT channel 43.2, not their main channel which is 43.1. If local cable in those communities carries the 43.2 channel it would might be on another number, but it is WPMT’s 43.2.

In Washington, DC, WDCW will carry three hours of the parade from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., that is most of the string bands, on its main channel.
